OAC Minister: Collective Action and Innovation to Protect Our Oceans

OAC Minister

The Ocean Affairs Commission (OAC) celebrated the third annual National Oceans Day on June 8, 2022. The event called on the nation to take practical action, think innovatively, act collectively and pursue ocean sustainability. In recent years, Taiwan has been active in marine affairs. In April, Taiwan participated in the "Our Ocean Conference" held in Palau to promote the achievements of Taiwan in promoting marine environment and maritime safety for many years and received international recognition of our marine contributions. In the future, the OAC will harness more private and industry momentum to work on marine innovation and sustainability. This year’s event was held virtually due to the ongoing pandemic and hopes to encourage the public to learn about Taiwan's efforts and achievements in marine ecological sustainability, maritime safety, marine industry prosperity and marine technology innovation online. OAC Minister Lee Chung-Wei noted during the event that the sea connects Taiwan to the world and great waterways are achieved by mankind. Taiwan's achievements in marine development have been evident to the international community for a long time. Facing the ocean, the convergence of talent and coexistence with the sea requires courage, wisdom and strength. The new era of the maritime nation requires the joint efforts of you and me.

In 2009, the United Nations designated June 8 as World Oceans Day. In 2019, Taiwan enacted the Ocean Basic Act and designated the same day as National Oceans Day. In 2020, the first National Oceans Day was held in Kaohsiung and the National Ocean Policy White Paper was published to formulate a national policy of Salute to the Seas and the results of governance reached a new milestone. In recent years, people's lives have been deeply affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The OAC’s promotion of the National Ocean Policy has continued to move forward as planned. Taiwan has made great progress in safeguarding our blue territories, promoting the indigenous defense warship policy, solidifying maritime security, optimizing the maritime legal system, implementing marine cleanliness, promoting marine conservation, promoting marine scientific research, cultivating marine culture and education, implementing Salute to the Seas policies, deepening international cooperation and developing marine industries. The theme of the United Nations World Oceans Day 2022 is "Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean," which serves as an inspiration for this year’s National Oceans Day event. With the theme of "Creation and Symbiosis, Ocean Sustainability," the event conveys the importance of the issue of ocean sustainability and integrates NGOs, civil society, industry and innovative technology to work together for the creation and sustainability of the ocean.
In response to the impact of the pandemic, the OAC organized the 3rd 2022 National Oceans Day celebration and related activities through virtual format and the website of the planned activities showcased the achievements of the OAC and its affiliated agencies/institutions (Coast Guard Administration, Ocean Conservation Administration and National Academy of Marine Research) in ocean administration. The events also included blessings and expectations from enterprises, schools and community groups who care about the ocean. In addition to showcasing the government's efforts and achievements in promoting marine affairs, the event also hopes to increase the public’s awareness of the ocean, so that all people can learn about the ocean, get close to the ocean, embrace the ocean and enjoy the beautiful, clean and safe blue skies and sea of Taiwan. These efforts serve to revitalize and protect the living marine environment and ensure resource sustainability and work together to realize the vision of a maritime nation.

Revitalization:Collective Action for the Ocean
"3rd National Oceans Day" Introduction

The theme of the United Nations World Oceans Day 2022 is Revitalization: Collective Action for the Ocean. Through the collective power of the public, we hope to innovate and change the way we use the ocean, thereby protecting its resources and vitality and achieving the goal of sustainable use.
In line with the theme of the United Nations World Oceans Day 2022, this year's main visual adopts the image of the earth with green lines to simplify the image of Taiwan and the blue waves to symbolize the continuous efforts in environmental protection as well as thriving and sustainable marine resources. The slogan is based on the practical actions of human beings - innovative thinking, collective action, co-prosperity and the pursuit of marine sustainability - and is set as "Creativity and Symbiosis for Ocean Sustainability[CC1] ." The theme of 2022 National Oceans Day is conveyed to showcase the results of the mission of the OAC and its affiliated agencies, namely the National Academy of Marine Research, the Ocean Conservation Administration and the Coast Guard Administration, as well as the collaborative efforts of the industry, government, academe and non-government organizations and the blessings and conservation actions from all corners. It is important for everyone to contribute to sustainability and innovation. The vitality and love for the sea can inspire and move people and we are confident in our capability and responsibility to ensure that tomorrow's ocean will be better.
The 3rd National Oceans Day event was changed to a virtual format due to the ongoing pandemic. Through the Internet, the concept and actions of Ocean Day were conveyed so that the public can further understand Taiwan's connection with the world, the actual implementation of the national ocean policy and the goal of promoting the concept of ocean sustainability.
