The current status and prospects of Taiwan's marine
energy development

ABSTRACT
Marine energy has many forms, including traditional offshore energy
resources and renewable energy. The former are oil and natural gas; the latter are
offshore wind power, tidal currents, wave energy, and ocean thermal energy. In
response to the policy of sustainable energy transition, as well as improving energy
independence and diversity, Taiwan has vigorously invested in the development of
renewable energy in recent years. Among them, the offshore wind power should be
the top priority and the capacity of the wind farm is expected to 5.7GW by 2025.
The offshore wind power would be one of Taiwan's important sources of new
energy in the future. On the other hand, as Taiwan is surrounded by the sea and has
abundant marine energy potential, the power generation of wave energy or tidal
current is the new chance in future development. With the growing trend to
introduce marine energy and the increase in economic activities in the ocean area,
it must be paid to such topics as marine space utilization planning, disaster
prevention, and marine pollution.
