Preliminary study on the long term evolution of costal morphology off
southwestern Taiwan
Due to the interacting and complicated affecting factors of the natural environment and human
conduct, the Yunlin-Chiayi coastline is seriously eroded, resulting in the shortage of sand sources
and change in sediment form. The elevation of the sand bar along the coast is decreasing gradually,
retreating to the land. In addition to the loss of national land, it also affects the industry, ecological
conditions, and disaster prevention. The imbalance of coastal erosion and accretion is the result of
both the time and space factors. Before planning for the prevention works, it requires careful
evaluation to investigate and construct the basic coastal environment data and the evaluation
technology with priority. In this stage, the plan and study will focus on the investigation and review
of the literature regarding Waisanding Sandbar, and to complete the calculation method of the
regional morphological change pattern. It can be regarded as the foundation for future studies.
